In the end, his irreverence for life caused his death. In addition to this, he lacked respect for his commander's orders. It was clear that Custer had no respect for the lives of Indians since he committed war crimes against them.

The interesting thing is that the Indians actually mutilated and scalped everyone but Custer. He could be recognizing that he's just attacking these people because they're unusual and different, while he comes from a supposedly civilized governed society. The definition of exceptional in this context most likely would mean unusual or weird.
